Ozymandias' Day Out

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 05:55 pm
Today I have mostly been fretting about [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat, who has had a leisure break at the v-e-t due to constipation and being Not Himself. Vet was concerned about his laboured breathing, but I suspect this was stress -- it was very busy, vet was running an hour late and there were babies and frantic kitties and a Great Dane. Oz explained in great detail what he was going to do to each of them once he got out of his basket. He is not a timid patient.

Anyway, nothing showed up on blood tests, and naturally his appetite and bounce returned as soon as he had an audience. He is home now (they wanted to keep him in overnight, but I was plaintive, so he's back here on special luxury diet and strict instructions not to go out): back to v-e-t tomorrow afternoon.

Nearly had fresh cyclist to go with gooshy food, as someone decided to overtake me on the right, turning left, at a roundabout where I was going straight on. (No signalling from either party, but then *I* wasn't turning ...)

Anyway, we are going to have a quiet night in, perusing the Petplan website.

Cat-aloguing

Apparently it's time I stopped cataloguing books for the night. (Shortly after this photo was taken, [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat located the power button.)

Ozymandias Update

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 10:13 am
As cat-owners know, a cat in need of examination will sprout many extra limbs. Luckily, I was able to call upon the Extra Limbs of Caro, and between us we got a good look at the affected area: definite limp but no sign of swelling, heat, breakage, broken claws, foreign objects in paw etc.

Oz is still limping today -- though not as much as he was limping yesterday when he had an Audience. It's no worse, though, so am inclined to leave vet-trip until it deteriorates, or if he's still limping by end of week.

It is two years today since Oz came to Rustat Rd.
Anyone familiar with cat-injuries* and free today for a bout of cat inspection? [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat is limping and in some distress. This is pretty sudden and I can't see anything wrong, but he resists examination and I'd rather double-check before paying £vast to vet.

Some Riddles

Monday, October 25th, 2010 01:48 pm
1. Why am I perched on the edge of my chair, in a way that cannot be good for my posture?
2. Why does my scalp bleed when I shampoo?
3. Why am I unable to sleep through the night?
4. Why is watching TV on the laptop, in bed, not an option?

Clue: see icon for Occam's Razor solution to all the above.

Cat-blogging

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 06:58 pm
Cut out the middle ape! Let your cat blog! Or at least Twitter ...
[Sony's] lifelogging device, which was prototyped in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, is equipped with a camera, an acceleration sensor, a GPS, etc to record the activities of a cat. Using the data collected by the acceleration sensor, etc, the device deduces the activities of a cat such as walking, sleeping and eating. The device can be used with the Twitter service and automatically posts comments in accordance with the activities.

But the really scary thing?
the device has a function to recognize other cats' faces taken by the camera embedded in the device. Sony CSL realized this function by using the facial images of several thousands* of cats that are available on the Internet as reference data

What, like this one? )

Do cats hallucinate?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 06:06 pm
[livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat is stalking things that aren't there I can't see. Several different things. In different parts of the room. He is quite nervous about them all, poor kitty.

Feline Overlords

Thursday, April 9th, 2009 11:34 am
Sorting through chest of drawers: I can just about work out why there's a (used) Felimazole pill in there (legacy of my darling Sam-cat, though I have moved house since his demise) but why o why is my underwear drawer scented with a sachet of catnip?

Tuesday morning

1. Instant cheer! Wikipedia's List of unusual articles (I'm currently enjoying Latin profanity and Eigengrau).

2. Off to v-e-t at 11:30 for [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat's Bowels. He is definitely under the weather and Clogged Up. Even glooopy food is uninteresting to him.

3. Haz new camera! this one, in blue: I really do like the Olympus Tuogh Tough range and given the British climate ...
Ozy is not generally a lap-cat, but today he decided he'd like to sit on my lap (purring like mad and being stroked). I had my legs braced against the bed so he wouldn't slide off. And now my knees are hurting from his GREAT WEIGHT.
I have a cold and am sneezing like mad.

So is the cat. (He's sneezed fairly regularly since I acquired him, but he's sneezing more now. Just what I wanted at 4am this morning: a face-ful of cat snot.)

Any chance we have infected each other?
Ozymandias, ever-so-stable and sociable rescue cat, reveals OTHER SIDE.

Something alarmed him last night -- possibly the alarming seagull feather I brought back from the beach for him -- and since then he's been neurotic and panicky. It's not playfulness: he's really scared of (for example) the cord of my dressing-gown, a hummock in the rug, a cup of coffee. One tentative paw then fast retreat. He spent most of the night in the bathroom, huddled in the corner. Poor kitty!

Seems a bit calmer this morning, though still very nervy. Perhaps the Blue Cross brainwash is wearing off ...

on returning

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 11:45 pm
Had nice evening out with (initially) [livejournal.com profile] childeric, then dinner with [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray, [livejournal.com profile] zoo_music_girl and [livejournal.com profile] easterbunny: we dined at the Bustaurant, which was extremely good though yes, I can get slightly travel-sick in a non-moving bus!

This is the first time I've come home to this flat after a night out and not been met at the door by an indignant cat.

Luckily, it's also nearly the last.
1. am Not Thinking About It, and busying myself with packing. Every time I stop I get maudlin. Solution: don't stop.

2. Am greatly appreciative of comments, texts, card, emails. And of nice evening in East Grinstead (no, really) with [livejournal.com profile] woolymonkey yesterday. Very good not to be in the flat alone.

3. I keep thinking I can hear Shiva, or see her out of the corner of my eye. And there is all this paper lying on the floor without anyone sitting on it.

4. Have got used to going into the kitchen without a Follower: but just now, making healthsome tuna mash (I'm told that eating is important), I put the tuna can down on the floor without thinking about it. And then thought about it.

5. In not-unrelated news, I am so sick of people messing me around with poor communication. Heating engineer was due 12:30: has just rung to say he'll be with me in 20 mins. Yesterday's Freecycle dropoff didn't happen due to recipient being out and not answering her phone. It's possible that in her case there is a good reason but an apology would be nice.

Cat Count: Zero

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 10:50 am
It's all over, including the vet bill.

Thanks to everyone for kind thoughts and good wishes. I know it was the right thing to do, but it still hurts.

Going to de-cat the flat now: won't be online again until tomorrow lunchtime.

The last few hours

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 07:48 am
Thanks to everyone for good wishes and reassurance: it really does help. Sorry not to respond to individual comments.

Shiva has had two fits since 6pm last night. They don't seem to be distressing her quite as much as the first couple did, but she is clearly not a well kitty. She's stopped throwing up, which is a relief, but I think it's because she's not really eating anything any more.

We sat outside for a while earlier and she was fascinated by the wind in the trees and the feathered food flitting around. But it was all a bit tiring for her and she fell off my lap.

She doesn't have as much personality as Sam had, but she's so sweet-natured and I'm going to miss her very much. And the flat will feel horribly empty when I come back from the vet's.

if the cat fits ...

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 02:50 pm
Vet called. Kidney failure, anaemia, high white blood cell count, possible cancer, maybe meningitis.

With extensive (and expensive) treatment, inc. 48 hours hospitalisation, she might last a few more months. But she could go at any time, and her quality of life is unlikely to improve very much.

I don't think I can put her (or me) through that. Final vet trip 10:30 tomorrow. Until then, quality time on sofa.

Back from the vet

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 10:36 am
It's not looking good. She's lost a lot of weight and is very dehydrated. We discussed whether it is worth hospitalising her and concluded probably not -- it'd stress her (and me) and would only postpone the inevitable.

Blood tests should be back this afternoon. Possible diagnoses include brain lesions, kidney problems, liver problems, bowel cancer. Will make decision once results are through, but it's a case of when rather than if.

We have expensive Hills Diet slooshy food and some lactulose. We have She has had an enema, what larks.

Retiring to sofa now.

Edit: another fit, 10:45, quite brief but very violent.
edit: and another, 19:30, brief but violent. Definite warning signs (enlarged pupils, staring)
