Thanks to everyone for kind thoughts and good wishes. I know it was the right thing to do, but it still hurts.

Going to de-cat the flat now: won't be online again until tomorrow lunchtime.

A very big hug to you. They were both very lucky cats to have someone who loved them so much, and that includes the love that it takes to make that incredibly hard decision.
