Can anyone advise?

A friend sent me some wonderful Christmas fishes from the Isle of Man. (No, no prizes for guessing who). However, they have only just arrived -- in two separate packages -- and are past best-by date. Paperwork in one package suggests that they weren't sent until the best-by date: postmark on one package is 2/1/04.

Is friend entitled to ring 'em up and get more fisssssssh* sent to me?

*raw and wrrrrriggling

I would expect so. Someone at the far end of things has messed up!

Mmmm! Mail order fish!

I can't help thinking that's just fundamentally WRONG!

Lovely fresh fish... fresh from the sea... three times a day...

[Actually, am only up to leaving the Shire in reread. Or rererererereread. Went to ROTK last night. Dead good if a bit needlessly messianic in places, mainly early on. After 2½h got me so spellbound I forgot to worry about safety of unlocked motorbike outside.]

I'd say almost certainly. Sale of Goods Act - they'd need to send the fish soonest to ensure it reached you in very good time as it is fresh food. I'd imagine that they'd replace it to keep their reputation if nothing else.

No harm in trying anyway. Are they nice fish? Will you need help devouring the replacements????

Oi, get in the queue!

Actually no, don't. They're a bit too bony for my taste :)

They're kippers, right? Fishes what have been preserved for transporting around the world in the Days Before Refrigeration? And doesn't the best-by date really just refer to when you might like to have bought them, rather than some automatic "this is no good now" date? I say eat 'em. If the first bite or so is no good, then return 'em.

Kippers are smoked herring so they're preserved as DMW says. The smell is probably just the 'smoking'. Tell you what, I'll sacrifice myself and eat one for you -as an unofficial foodtaster.
