Can anyone advise?

A friend sent me some wonderful Christmas fishes from the Isle of Man. (No, no prizes for guessing who). However, they have only just arrived -- in two separate packages -- and are past best-by date. Paperwork in one package suggests that they weren't sent until the best-by date: postmark on one package is 2/1/04.

Is friend entitled to ring 'em up and get more fisssssssh* sent to me?

They're kippers, right? Fishes what have been preserved for transporting around the world in the Days Before Refrigeration? And doesn't the best-by date really just refer to when you might like to have bought them, rather than some automatic "this is no good now" date? I say eat 'em. If the first bite or so is no good, then return 'em.

Kippers are smoked herring so they're preserved as DMW says. The smell is probably just the 'smoking'. Tell you what, I'll sacrifice myself and eat one for you -as an unofficial foodtaster.
