Probably not actually the Camp Commander, but this statue at Vindolanda appealed to us anyway. Also, genuine Roman ice cream! I did not know that the Romans introduced the cultivated cherry to Britain. And now we have authentic insult for natives: Brittunculi. There are a lot of 'em about.

Walking up through the gorge to the Mile Castle Pub. Skittering bunnies, post-industrial ruins, the steady sound of running water: celandines, bluebells, cow-parsley, speedwell (two sorts), forget-me-nots, campion, buttercups, small pink flower I've forgotten the name of, vetch, shepherd's purse, nettles, daisies, dock, trefoil, ferns, wild garlic, ivy, dandelions, thistle, reeds. Many trees. Many noisy birds. Maybe the flicker of a red squirrel. There should be more places like this.
