My completely unsupported, unscientific contention is that increased exercise levels are beneficial at least in part because of the mental stimulation they involve, as opposed to it being a purely physical effect.

I don't suffer from SAD, but this persistent cloud cover has slowed me right down and really limited my energy levels. I'm glad that I had the boost of spending a week somewhere sunny last month.

I feared my solo 6 and 12+ mile walks would be dull, in the sense of progressing so slowly through a landscape, but (and partly because of MP3 player) it did allow a lot of thinking through and not of the disect-my-life type spiral. On the other hand, it turns out you can hear too much Tom Waits in a day (despite Nighthawks at the Diner being a good tempo for walking to).
