I'm having to limit my computer usage to 45-minute slots because of a back problem, which means that I'm losing track of my Friends. Apologies! The back injury is probably a torn ligament, sustained (don't laugh) while getting stressed in a yoga class taught by a substitute teacher with a very annoying voice ... moral of the story? Don't get annoyed in a yoga class. It ranges from a mild ache to severe pain whenever I move, so I'm abusing painkillers and doing very mild exercise. It should clear up eventually, and there's nothing a doctor can do short of telling me to rest, which -- being smart -- I had worked out for myself.

However, I had a wonderful weekend helping the (very wonderful) [livejournal.com profile] ladymoonray and [livejournal.com profile] zoo_music_girl celebrate their birthday. On Friday night we went to a nightclub and I watched an interesting and educational film about giant squid (more of your Lovecraftian beast, really). The sound was turned down and the club was playing mopey goth tunes, which were actually a pretty good soundtrack. Saturday was birthday party time, featuring sunshine, pink drink, cat poi, and my retiring upstairs to lie flat and feel sorry for myself.

Some people attempting the Astral Pole.

Sunday we went to the beach and I discovered that splashing around in the surf is immensely good for my back. I intend to demand it on a regular basis, strictly for medicinal reasons.

By Sunday night I was exhausted ...

Oh, and while I'm at it, some pictures of [livejournal.com profile] mircea's various departures ...

Yes, beaches v v g for bad backs. Best thing one can do that doesn't involve calories (well, except maybe one other thing..) Maybe go beach the week after your picnic if weather nice??

Jesus, THAT's the squid?

I'm scared from here!

And anyway, cephalopods normally have a parrot-like beak, not a gaping maw filled with fangs...

Piffle!

Minor details.

And, no, that's just one of the giant squid's tentacles....

The camera never lies.
Perhaps we were using the cardboard version; I forget ...

Some people attempting the Astral Pole.

I was once able to lever a broomstiock about myself in the approved manner, but I suspect the suppleness I once exhibited has been eroded by the advancing years. Nevertheless, were any of the attempts successful?

Oh yes. Some of these Goth types are surprisingly flexible. Possibly their skeletons have mutated into something more bendy than bone.

If only I could remember who I was applauding. But there were several successes.

I failed at the first attempt but seemed to get more flexible as the Gewurztraminer went down the afternoon went on and managed it at the second.

Then you did better than a well-known British SF writer. He failed on the first attempt and essayed a second, but got himself so stuck that the only way out was to snap the broomstick in two.
