Doing some tidying / looking for some paperwork: I keep finding scraps of paper with Deep Thoughts on 'em. Transcription -> fewer scraps of paper.

After seeing an English-language production of Lucia di Lammermoor:
'no longer here on earth' means something quite different in Victorian opera than in SF.

Partial Eclipse tomorrow, wheee!

Darn, should've stayed in Edinburgh ...
In London the partial phase of the eclipse begins at 0933 BST (0833 GMT). Maximum eclipse is at 1018 BST (0918 GMT) when 12% of the Sun will be blocked. The partial eclipse ends at 1105 BST (1005 GMT).

Further north in the British Isles, observers enjoy a better view. From Edinburgh 23.5% of the Sun is covered and from Lerwick in the Shetland Isles, the Moon obscures 36% of the solar disk.

More on the NASA Eclipse page. Apparently this eclipse is also visible from Second Life! (This would amuse me much more if the weather wasn't looking so grim: Second Life may give better visibility than British summer.)

Had a fabulous, if rather energetic, weekend in Edinburgh with ladymoonray and swisstone: we ate, drank, made merry, mocked history and climbed a volcano or two -- ably assisted by zotz, major_clanger, feorag, fluffcthulhu and others. Photos on Flickr, write-up done more ably by some of the aforementioned. My skin has erupted into a little map of the really indulgent venues, such as Chocolate Soup ...
