Old and Fat

three and a half weeks of low-carbing (not 100% strict, but no bread or pasta, and trying to eat healthily) and I am not one inch closer to fitting back into my black suit trousers.

Feeling very ineffectual.

I find eating lots of fresh fruit and veg, drinking lots of water, and just trying to cut down on fatty stuff, sweet stuff, and booze, is actually more effective than anything else!

I'm eating salad instead of baguette for lunch, fish'n'salad rather than pasta in the evenings ... avoiding crisps, chocolate bars etc ... drinking lots of water (as usual -- 8-10 plastic cups per day at work, plus plenty of water and herbal tea at home) and it has not made any difference at all. Could understand it if I had been drinking more than usual, but can't believe that Saturday's excesses have wiped out three weeks of good habits.

And would make me suicidal.

What about exercise? How much do you do a week? Eating well is good, but on its own it's not really enough.

As much exercise as feasible. I walk Victoria Station-> work (about a mile and a quarter) nearly every morning, and several evenings per week; swim 500m two or three times a week; take the stairs (and live on the third floor!) ... Exercise patterns haven't changed, admittedly, but it's not as though I don't do any.

You were looking all gaunt and lovely on saturday. So perhaps the weight loss is starting at the top and working its way down?

I can recommend a good optician.

It's not the eyesight, it's all in the interpretation. I choose to see beauty (unless I'm feeling bitchy). And anyway, you WERE looking all cheekboney.

cheekbones = makeup (evil and pink tho' it was). But thank you for seeing beauty! I shall hire you instead of buying a pair of scales (or, more realistically, a new pair of trousers to wear to work).

You are not in the least ineffectual. You're struggling with your weight; almost everyone does that at some point in their life.

Honestly hon, I think expecting low-carb to work in three weeks is probably too much. It might work if you went no-carb, but that is just unhealthy and I'd worry even more if you tried it.

Low-fat, combined with exercise, really is the healthiest way to lose weight, and the slower you do it the more likely it is to stay off. Please, be gentle with yourself.

I don't expect miracles, but I did hope for some improvement after three and a half weeks. So much for healthy living, watching everything I eat, etc; might as well lie on the sofa, reading and eating chocolates, for all the difference it's made.

Now that's an idea.

There must be something I can do to change some aspect of my life, but for the life of me I don't know what.
