First came Nine Worlds: love the new venue (Hammersmith Novotel) and felt much less frazzled than in previous years. My Historical Headcanon (concerning Christopher Marlowe) seemed well-received and I was on a couple of interesting panels about historical fiction, fanfiction, writing, etc.

Then to Edinburgh to skew my monthly averages for various types of Culture. I like the shorter-than-usual performances (they averaged an hour): leaves plenty of time for climbing the hills of which Edinburgh is composed, and pausing for refreshment at each summit.

Dog Cat Days

Thursday, September 4th, 2014 09:51 am
So, August has happened.

It included:
- Nine Worlds convention (++good, many interesting conversations and overall fun, all my panels went well apart from the one that [thankfully] nobody turned up to)
- Loncon3 convention (less good, mostly because I spent a lot of time running around and saw old friends only in passing, usually on escalators or between programme items; my panels were a mixed bag though I did get complimented for moderation! also, was pretty ill)
- Shoreham Air Show (AirCon) (+good, EuroFighter v loud, wingwalkers v constrained by 'elf&safety, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden in a vintage WW1 plane, also there was a Lancaster but not the Canadian one)
- as much sleep / relaxation as I could fit in
- putting lots of stuff into boxes
- taking some stuff (= [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat) out of boxes
- several relaxing afternoons on the M25

Morals of August:
- do not participate in two conventions over consecutive weekends
- spend less time on the M25 by moving inside it
- quitting werk to spend time on beach is a surefire way to bring RAIN
Good things:
- I was on the 'Not the Clarkes' panel (with Phil N, Claire B, moderated by Edward J). It went well and we were unanimous that Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice was the best SF on the shortlist. Sorry, Ms Leckie: apparently the 'Not the Clarkes' panel's approval is as a KISS OF DOOM. The actual jury seldom agrees.
- Fanfic panel (talking about A03 #million, other fanfic archives, Wattpad, writers removing their work etc) was fab, and very ably moderated by [personal profile] ladymoonray.
- SUNSHINE. According to the Glasgow City Council representative, this kind of weather happens in Glasgow 'regularly', though the interval was not mentioned. On Saturday I sat outside by the river with some of the Nine Worlds crew, drank wine and got sunburnt.
- went to some other panels, but barely took notes.
- talked to lots of fab people.
- there was WINE.
- gazed at the ISS from the banks of the Clyde (twice)
- swam! pool was waaaay too hot on Friday / Saturday, seemed much cooler Sunday / Monday.

Less good:
- did not sleep past 6am even once, even when wine consumption the previous night would have made it thoroughly advisable.
- Glasgow is a long way away.

tl;dr: WAS GOOD. but tiring.
Thanks to The Write Fantastic for a thoroughly enjoyable day in Oxford yesterday: basically a small, amiable convention, at which I caught up with lots of people I haven't seen / talked to for far too long, and did not fall over at all.
programme write-up )

The good thing about the day (apart from all the lovely people) was that it got my brain back into writerly mode. Indeed, I was plotting a short story during one break (Google Search on my phone is very handy!)

FAO [livejournal.com profile] coalescent: that Geoff Ryman thing (Mr Ryman was yesterday revealed as the God of Coffee, but that's not what he will be talking about.)

*steampunk dragons. I rest my case
