Ha! I'm glad I'm not the only one cynical about the whole thing...!

Wasn't St. Valentine stoned to death or something? What was so romantic about that?

And to think that people at work used to think I was strange for not forcing [livejournal.com profile] moral_vacuum to buy me overpriced flowers/tat on V day! Why should people have to spend stupid amounts of money on one particular day just to prove something to the world at large? I think all sensible people should unite to boycott V Day, saving their pennies to buy nice stuff for the one they love on another day when it won't cost the earth, & maybe putting Hallmark out of business as a bonus!

Funnily enough, I made very similar comments on [livejournal.com profile] childeric 's journal just the other day. Not paying (And I can't believe that's how much it is these days) £80 for a dozen roses to be delivered, when I could buy lots and lots of lovely things (which are less cliched and commercial, and far more personal) for my partner instead.

On my desk is a silk red rose with a barbed wire stem - that's the closest I get.

Red roses are only £80 for a dozen this week, the rest of the year I see them on florists' stalls round the City for about £15.

The best Valentine gift I ever got was a heart shaped windchime thing and a box of heart shaped Galaxy truffles. I've still got the windchime.

I have just agreed no costly extravagant gestures with my better half. Neither of us can afford it and I'd never get a bouquet home on the plane intact.
