And to think that people at work used to think I was strange for not forcing moral_vacuum to buy me overpriced flowers/tat on V day! Why should people have to spend stupid amounts of money on one particular day just to prove something to the world at large? I think all sensible people should unite to boycott V Day, saving their pennies to buy nice stuff for the one they love on another day when it won't cost the earth, & maybe putting Hallmark out of business as a bonus!

Funnily enough, I made very similar comments on childeric 's journal just the other day. Not paying (And I can't believe that's how much it is these days) £80 for a dozen roses to be delivered, when I could buy lots and lots of lovely things (which are less cliched and commercial, and far more personal) for my partner instead.
On my desk is a silk red rose with a barbed wire stem - that's the closest I get.
The best Valentine gift I ever got was a heart shaped windchime thing and a box of heart shaped Galaxy truffles. I've still got the windchime.
I have just agreed no costly extravagant gestures with my better half. Neither of us can afford it and I'd never get a bouquet home on the plane intact.
