In celebration of being granted 120 mins per day of non-werk interwebs whilst at werk ...
Five Android Apps for Getting Stuff Done
1. Evernote
Automatically synchronises notes, images, lists etc between phone, laptop, netbook and werk desktop. There's a browser add-in that lets me send any web page straight to Evernote, which is a great way of reading when I'm away from wireless broadband.
2. Colornote
Does the one thing that's missing from Evernote -- ticky-box to-do lists. It's a very basic note-taking app with two modes -- text or list -- and I do find it better for jotting down completely random things.
3. Endomondo
Tracks my runs via GPS, and gives me a little map and some stats (including calories expended), all of which are also recorded on the Endomondo website. Also great for mapping walks, and can be used (albeit less innovatively) for recording other exercise.
4. Profile Scheduler
One-tap app for switching from 'home' mode (wireless on, GPS off, mobile data off, noise on) to 'werk' mode (mobile data on, wireless off, GPS off) to 'outdoor' mode (GPS on, wireless and noise off, mobile data on) to 'silent' mode (guess, go on, guess). You can also schedule it to switch modes automatically (e.g. to 'night' mode at midnight). All modes are fully configurable so if you decide you need a different wallpaper at werk, or to start Endomondo when you're outdoors, that's easy to set up.
5. Routinely
A simple habit-tracker. I have things I like to do frequently, such as exercise and creativity: Routinely tells me how long it is since I've done them, and I tell Routinely when I do something. Green highlight for recent, red for more than 4 days ago. QUick and easy sense of achievement.
Five Android Apps for Not Getting Stuff Done
1. Klip
RSS feeds and Klip'd pages direct to phone. Great for reading offline and keeping up to date with blogs.
2. Heavens Above
For satellite-spotting (though I do also get tweets from the ISS if it's going to be visible).
3. Satellite AR
For real-time satellite tracking superimposed on real-time surroundings (via the camera: you can also pick plain blue sky). Fabulous (if not wholly useful) way of finding out how many tin cans are whizzing overhead at any time.
4. WoNow Cambridge
What's on in Cambridge: film times, concerts, exhibitions, gigs, clubs, theatre ...
5. Carcassonne [PAID]
This is the reason I upgraded my phone. It's a little fiddly to play on a small screen, but a good implementation.
All available from Android Market so I shan't provide links, though Evernote, Endomondo, and Klip have associated web interfaces which add and enhance functionality.
