Business Ethics 101

Have suddenly realised that the extremely and uncharacteristically difficult day I am having at work - masses of negative feedback on new system, telephone going every ten minutes - may be part of an attempt to discredit my manager, who is off on maternity leave soon. (I would not dream of saying that she is hormone-addled. I like my manager.)

I don't want to be caught up in office politics. It's one of the reasons I'm a contractor rather than a permie. It is quite bad enough having to work here without being expected to care about it as well.

And I don't think I make a good scapegoat. Attitude problems.

Do not go quietly into that post-implementation meeting. Rage, rage against … well, against the lack of business analysis ("more than me job's worth, squire, 'snot a technical requirement") and planning hubris. Also, as usual, they have not listened to their technical staff (me, in this instance) and as a result are up the creek. I like to think I'm watching from the bank (metaphor! Metaphor!) but suspect I will be dragged in.

Kicking and screaming is a sensible and professional response, when all else fails.

I spit, too.

There is a lot of it about, as they say. This week I heard how one of my friends (who is well known to a lot of LJers, but whose name I am not going to divulge) was 'got rid off' in an unceremonious fashion while she was off work after a life-threatening illness. By the time she returned, the vultures had cooked up enough poison to cost her her job of five years. Very, very nasty indeed.
