5:00: nonchalantly enquire of bugshaw where I might find the stopcock should I ever have the urge to gaze upon it
5:05: locate stopcock
5:10: feebly attempt to turn water off
5:15: actually turn water off, 'cause am Tuff
5:20: identify source of leak, google 'temporary fix leaking pipes duct tape'
5:21: note that leak is in pipe to outside tap.
5:22: which can be isolated / turned off
5:23: stop leak
5:25: mopping up
5:27: reassure bugshaw that house is hardly under water at all
5:28: thank Nearest Available Competent Male for moral support
5:30: FLOMP.

*groliffe, as he is at beginning of alphabet in my phone, and could feasibly rescue me from flood on his way home

thank god it's not just me who doesn't know stopcock location! (In Redhill I had an excellent excuse, there wasn't one -- well, there was one for both flats, which was under the front path somewhere)

Did think it was behind the dishwasher, but discovered the other year that that's just an isolation valve for the feed to the dishwasher...

...is glad we don't have an outside tap...
