I have gone through all the MP3 files in my 'To Listen' folder, correctly labelled them with artist and title, filed the mashups and covers separately, and deleted about 250 songs (some were duplicates, but many just sounded the same: I blame those huge 'Indie Rock Playlist' downloads). Net result: 190 random tracks. (Plus 250GB of music on the music drive.)

I feel calmer.

I've tried various software packages that automate the process -- and some are pretty good, though usually not free -- but with this particular set, it was more useful to actually listen to bits, and work out just how many whiny soulful indie ballads I needed ...

I've got a file renaming tool which can rename files based on the ID tags, but the challenge is to clean up the tags first, thanks to all of the people who provide miss-spelt and malformed album details to the databases used by ripping software ... [sigh]
