The Marlowe Society's production of Ben Jonson's The Alchemist. This was hilarious, with some very fine acting (esp. Joey Batey as Face -- genius comic timing, and great chemistry with Nick Rickett's Subtle -- and Will Seaward as Mammon) and effective use of anachronism: Face's turn as Igoresque lab assistant chewing meditatively on a trouser-leg; 'spirits' in whiteface and bob wigs; TARDIS noises... "The Doctor!"; "don't call me Shirley" ...

Also, [livejournal.com profile] owlfish and I are almost certain that we spotted Sir Ian McKellen in the bar: not that improbable, as he is an alumni of the Marlowe Society.

Aww, you shoulda talked to him! He has a little routine: you praise a show you saw him in, he asks where you were sitting, you tell him and he says "Ah, good seats, good seats..."

Whatever gets you through, I guess. He does it with lovely aplomb.
