First failure-to-complete on Couch to 5K: Week 5, Session 3 includes a 20-minute run (I have not run for more than 8 minutes at a time since I was at school, probably) and I had to stop after about 10 mins due to bad pain / cramping / spasms in both legs, knees down to soles of feet.

Will have another try tomorrow. And am not actually beating myself up about this, because I think I've done amazingly well to get through all the previous sessions on first attempt.

May not be a coincidence that today is also a puffy-eyelid day. Fluid retention? General weirdness? 'weak with starvation' as transmitted by unwillingly-dieting [livejournal.com profile] ozymandias_cat?

Hurting yourself is definitely not in the plan, and you have indeed done wonderfully well already.

Have you considered that there might be a physical cycle contributing here? I have a distinct monthly cycle of maximum effort, which I only know because of regularly doing Pilates. It provides a structured period of activity twice a week against which I can track my own ability to go through the hour: at best I work through the hour doing all the set exercises at the hardest level for the maximum number of repetitions; at worst I have to reduce the working level or the number of reps or both to be able to get through without stopping, and sometimes have to sit out particular exercises altogether. But both my maximum and minimum achievements increase year or year.

It could certainly be a physical cycle -- I haven't been running for long enough to spot a pattern (week one was HARD HARD HARD in a way that comes from not having done any exercise for months beforehand!) I'll keep an eye on this.

Don't beat yourself up - you need build up at a rate that works for you.
