thanks to those who addressed my vocabulary woes yesterday, though I refuse to believe there isn't a Technical Term (other than 'form') for a wig-stand ...

Today, I have been googling 'renaissance manuscript authentication', 'early BBC TV drama', and 'coronation 1953'. And wondering if one can classify playscript format in terms of voice and tense (e.g. 1st person / 3rd person; past, present ...) Suspect the answer is 'no: don't be daft'.

The Voynich Manuscript is wonderful; something that looks like it ought to have been created as a prop for a role-playing game but is actually real and a true mystery. Indeed, I think I first heard of it in one of princeofcairo's articles on Weird Real Life Stuff To Inspire RPGs, but I also saw a BBC 4 documentary (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/features/voynich-manuscript.shtml) a little while back on it.

I don't know about wig stands, but Ede & Ravescroft have a downloadable book on the history of legal dress, with a large section on formal wigs. (4 MB PDF (http://legal.edeandravenscroft.co.uk/images/site/Legal_Habits_book.pdf), seems to have some text conversion issues.)

My guess would be that the Voynich manuscript is pretty but meaningless. There's a line of argument linking it to John Dee and Edward Kelley, of course.

I asked a German friend if there was a term in German for wig stands and she said
"Perückenständer"

Sadly that means Wig Stand in German ...couldn't find anything better in English, sorry.

My Voynich ms. excitement of the month is that a Canadian scholar friend of mine is in a t.v. program, hosted by William Shatner, which deals with the ms. (among other topics - that's the bit my friend was brought in for). I know it was/will b e broadcast in the US and Canada - but I don't know if I'll ever have a chance to see it.
