[film] Alice in Wonderland
Sunday, March 7th, 2010 05:38 pmSaw Alice in Wonderland (plus BONUS 3D Doctor Who trailer -- slightly pointless as actual DW will not be in 3D, but pretty).
Liked film, though enjoyment somewhat diminished by PIcturehouse suffering a powercut about 20 mins in -- they restored picture very quickly but not sound, so there's 10 mins of dialogue at the garden party that we didn't get. Yay Picturehouse for giving us all complimentary tickets to another screening, but still.
The film could have done with a little more backstory at beginning rather than end -- it would have helped to see snips of Alice's first visit (when everything was a lot tidier) earlier in the story.
Beautiful post-apocalypse Underland; lots of beautiful characters (Bandersnatch eyes more human than most others); Mad Hatter's accent geographically uncertain, and also? Scratch the surface of Mr Depp and there is pirate not far beneath: even the less avid Depp fans in our party noted this.
It is a shame to have Johnny Depp playing a character so very ... inhuman.
I was reminded of a lot of other fantasy movies, especially visually: surely those refs to Narnia, Golden Compass, and especially LOTRx3 were deliberate?
White Queen cookery lesson delightfully revolting.
And I confess I rather liked Alice. And her frocks.
