Unexpected Arrows
Originally uploaded by tamaranth
Spent a happy couple of hours on the balcony this afternoon, watching the aeroplanes: a Lancaster, a squad of Sopwiths, a pair of Spitfires, some shiny military hardware, and (as seen by pretty nearly everyone in the street, all leaning out of windows and on balconies) the Red Arrows. Turns out this was the Marshall Aerospace open day (for values of 'open' meaning 'employees, their families and their friends') ... Some proper spectator-photos and a good write-up here.

So that's what it was! We were all watching from the allotments but everyone thought it was overflow from a show at Duxford. To be honest, I don't like planes (nasssty noisssy, greenhoussssse gassssssy) but it was moving to hear oldies with tears in their eyes about how 'those things saved us in the war' and stories about how the next door neighbours had a Spitfire pilot for a son and he used to buzz the house whenever he could swing by that way.

Drooling with envy (I was somewhere off the Essex coast on a ferry at the time...)

Did you get to see the Vulcan?

They get serviced at Marshalls and the show is a local perk. They used to do this at Bitteswell, Leics, when I was still at school, too. (We had fantastic views from our upstairs windows yesterday.)
