The Nine Ladies, near Matlock: strong contender for Worst-Signposted Ancient Monument. In the end I followed signs for the Druid's Head Inn - all stone circles were Built by Druids, at least in popular tradition - then sought the highest concentration of verge-parked cars. ... Could do without the eager Activity Course, who are looking for flags and have missed at least 2.

I went there three times before I actually found them.

And when I did it happened to be the day of the 1999 eclipse and the circle was full of hippies smoking dope. No problem with that, of course, but I was with my family and oh it was just difficult.

aha, so you were there 10 years and one day before me!

No hippies, but the Activity Course were completely oblivious to the landscape around them. And I am *so* appalled by the 'info' panels, which show artists' impressions of Ancient Britons dancing in the moonlight we know a song about that, don't we, children? and ZERO FACTUAL CONTENT.

It wasn't the one I'd originally intended, which is just off the M6 and would probably have been easier to find! Ended up driving around a small corner of Derbyshire, increasingly frustrated by complete lack of signage.
