It took a bit of creative driving, but I found my way to the gorgeous field of poppies that'd been catching my eye on every Cambridge<->London train journey. I believe they're grown as part of the crop cycle -- either for themselves or to adjust soil chemistry. (I've been told this is why rosebushes are grown in vineyards, though recent conversation contradicts that theory.)

I've been told that rose bushes in vineyards (which I've seen at the end of each row of vines) are there because roses are prey to some of the diseases that would also attack vines and act as an early warning. But I don't know whether that's true, or the whole story, either...

That's what we've been told by folk at vineyards (which is why you'll often see a rosebush at the end of each row).

the wineries I've asked all say they are both susceptible to the same things - and more susceptible, so the vintner knows in enough time to have a chance of treating the vines before damage
