non-washout

Yesterday was a bit of a washout what with one thing and another.

Today has, so far, been ever so successful: Freecycle stuff gone! curtains for [livejournal.com profile] childeric vanquished! orange bit of wall in bathroom (where just washing off hairdye with a cloth stripped the paint -- and it wasn't the hairdye, I repeated the experiment with cold water and a sponge) painted cream! fingers crossed that cream matches other cream on wall! Amazon customers cowed! FedEx redelivery sorted! And it's only 11:30!

[livejournal.com profile] tamaranth go flomp now.

NB can anyone offer advice on how to remove the tool-bit from the bit that holds it in a power drill?

Re the drill, does the chuck (the part that holds the tool) look like the thing on the right in this picture (http://littlemachineshop.com/Products/Images/480/480.1212.jpg)? If so, you'll be looking for the thing on the left.

the shiny bit is magnetic, it's the dull bit I'm trying to remove.

Hmmm. Do you have two pairs of pliers? If so, I would try heating the silver bit in a gas flame to make it expand and then pull the two apart. Needless to say this is a bit drastic and involves the risk of hot bits of metal flying apart so should be done with care!

Other than that I would try gently tapping it with a hammer. You don't want to squash the silver bit and inadvertently crimp it onto the tool bit, but a bit of mechanical shock might help jar them apart.

(I cannot help but note that I am sitting here safely some fifty km away cheerfully advising application of extreme heat or violence. I do feel a bit guilty about this.)

are you sure 50km is a safe distance if this ends in disaster?!

Tried your suggestions, no joy (though lots of exciting colours as the cheap shiny finish smouldered), but have determined that the drill bit is actually inserted the wrong way round (not sure if this was me, seems a bit daft but who knows?) so is probably jammed. Presumably these things are pretty standard and I can acquire another one easily?

Yes, you can easily get them. In fact I have at least one spare which you are welcome to.

I'm glad today is being so much better.

Are you sure they're meant to come apart? That looks like the thing for holding bits in a power screwdriver, where you put a small screwdriver bit in the far (shiny) end from the dull, hexagonal end.
