why do some cats adore the smell of bleach?

in other, though related news: am doing housewerk in advance of Property Inspection tomorrow. Cannot really be bothered. I will head them off by complaining about pathetic paint job in bathroom (if you wipe it with a cloth, it reveals the lurid orange beneath the magnolia); the window-frame that is still broken; inability to open most other windows; and, oh yes, the Neighbours.

Smelling bleach can't be a good thing.

Your head-'em-off idea is excellent strategy, however.

Because they know that if you tell anyone, no-one will believe you?

strong possibility there -- though my sister's cat loves the smell of bleach too, and licks the work surfaces when they've been wiped down with bleach and water.

cats = teh weird

cats = teh weird

Yes, and they do the things they do to freak us out. [livejournal.com profile] mrowe's cat loves lettuce, and green peppers and tomatoes. One of ours collects pegs, stones, emery boards and anything else he can carry (and is also the Scummiest Cat in the World(TM))...

ours loves garlic bread, collects pens and thinks that a nice fat earthworm makes a wonderful gift for mum-slave...

Oooh! We had an earthworm at Christmas but thankfully none since. We've had mice, pigeons, ducklings, half a roof tile, and frogs by the score, as well as a newt, but thankfully no more worms - they make a terrible mess...

Half a roof tile and a newt? I stand in awe of your kitty's inventiveness!

It's the ammonia. To a cat, bleach smells like the trace of a strange cat's urine, so they are both interested and liable to widdle in the same place, unfortunately. The best way to avoid this effect is to use Milton instead (or carpet shampoo).

then why does one of ours open his mouth to lick the freshly bleached cup? eeeeuw!

Probably for the same reason. They do this with strange urine, too.

and again I say; eeuuuw ;-)

and for her next trick, Calli will try to scratch her backside by dragging it across the carpet (no, she is fully wormed, she's just Odd Like That)
