Cat-scaring

Have been sitting outside in the sunshine reading.
Near the beginning of the novel, a disreputable character was introduced. We know this because the adjective 'disreputable' preceded his name on page after page.
Then he disappeared and was not mentioned at all for hundreds of pages. (There was plenty else going on.)
Then right at the end he reappears. And I snarled in rage, because disreputable again. And the cats both ran away to hide. Possibly afraid I would read aloud to 'em.

Moral of this story: repetition will be mocked, so don't do it.

You need Russell Thorndike. His characters are frequently queer, disreputable, and ejaculate when they speak, but he varies his adjectives.
