However, to generate this amount of power the generator had to be constantly switched on, which required more effort from the wearer." But isn't the Western world full of people who are trying to get more exercise, i.e. expend more effort? (Often whilst talking on their mobiles ...)

Drowning of Harem Women Denied. It was in 1899, so not exactly current -- but getting on for three hundred years after the incident that I was googling. I didn't even know (= had never been curious enough to check) that the 'Sultan's Harem' persisted into the 20th century.
