Fascinating (and contentious) survey of British music:
- dance music is faster Up North (160bpm) than in London (90bpm). (Inverse proportion to average temperature?)
- Two London branches of HMV are responsible for 50% of all classical music sales nationwide. (Given the pathetic classical sections of most 'record stores' -- what does one call them now? -- the trend is not surprising, but the starkness of it is.)
- Leeds: Goth Capital of Britain.

And that would be a shock to who? [grin] It's where they invented it!

I wonder what percentage of classical music is bought on Amazon.

And would be fascinated to see a breakdown of their shipping stats, based on area/postcode...

Oh - and thanks for the criticism article. I'm on a panel about that at EasterCon, so it's very handy to get more opinion.

Hmm. I think you're right, and it's partly down to the nature of HMV shops - well, music shops in general. There's so much classical music around, if the shops don't stock a good range, people won't buy it because they can't find what they want. And then it gets circular, because people aren't buying so HMV won't stock it. I suppose only the London shops are big enough to have a good range.

Personally I buy classical music either from Amazon (because it's cheap, and they have an excellent range), or from MDC (because it's underneath the Festival Hall and I Want It Now).

yeah, that got my TV head thinking, I've seen umpteen histories of popular music in Britin, but never a geography.
