Firefox oddities

I'm experiencing a couple of issues with Firefox 2.0.0.11 -- one is new, one ongoing -- which are not serious enough to warrant bug reports but are vexing me.

1. entering a URL in the address bar and hitting [ENTER] no longer loads the page. In fact, there doesn't seem to be a way of loading a URL from the address bar. (This has only been 'mildly vexing' so far today, as I've been doing LJ / Facebook / email: it will escalate to very vexing as soon as I want to look at anything I don't have bookmarked / toolbarred.)

2. Neither [PageDn] nor the down-arrow cursor key actually move me down a page. I have to use the bloody scrollbar. (This is ongoing, and I've become used to it: still, vexing.)

Advice?

Check your ctrl key (and alt, shift etc.) isn't stuck down. What happens when you try [enter] or [pg dn] in other applications?

I assume you've shut down Firefox and restarted it to eliminate memory problems? Reboot? Have you installed/upgraded any add-ons recently? Something that might be stealing the focus? Try disabling all add-ons and see if still happens.

Disable javascript and reload Firefox (with something very plain as your home page). Any difference? Does the problem only happen after loading a particular web page?

- no keys stuck down.
- all keys functional in other apps (well, Word / NoteTab / Paint Shop Pro) and in online apps such as GoogleDocs
- the [Enter] key issue is probably only since last reboot: I use the address bar a lot, so I think I'd have noticed if it had been happening before.
- no new add-ons, in fact according to Firefox the only active add-on is Delicious. Disabling it doesn't seem to fix the problem.
- will do simple reload and page-by-page test once I've read all the things I've got open to read!

Somewhat relieved that it isn't some terrible Known Issue that'd mean reinstalling everything. On the other hand, if it was a Known Issue that had a Known Solution that'd be good!

Do other applications work ok?

does pressing page-down make _anything_ happen? Does it move to the next link down the page, for instance?

Everything else seems to be working fine.

[PageDown] has no noticable effect in Firefox -- nor does down-arrow -- but they function in other contexts.

Firefox is borked. Delete your preferences, uninstall and reinstall!

I'd agree with that. Also, if you've installed any addons lately, delete them before reinstalling. I've had problems with Firefox before caused by dodgy addons.

I had major problems with it this week - images missing, menus that didn't work, etc, but neither of the problems you describe. Cured by uninstalling, and reinstalling.

boo to un/reinstall! But I'll do that if it doesn't go away by 'magic'. (Did you work out why yours had gone sour?)

No idea what triggered it, I'm afraid. Our blog page stopped loading properly, LJ didn't give me the navigation bar (instead it had all the menu options messily at the foot of the page), the images that were showing on Flickr front pages (mine and contacts) that day no longer loaded, none of the Flickr menus were available. I think that was it.

Himself had a similar problem where the views graph on our blog was replaced by a random image. That disappeared by magic. As did my problem where all the user icons on LJ were switched around randomly (but that was an earlier version of Firefox).

Could be a bad install. Go to %appdata%\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ - then into the randomly named profile folder. You can then delete the extensions folder and see if that fixes it. If so, then just reinstall your extensions!
