Today's link, to a story by Martin Amis -- originally published in the New Yorker and the Observer, but it seems to've disappeared from all its official URLs -- comes with a warning: it's about 9/11.

There are several criticisms that could be (and have been) levelled at this story: that it's racist; that it's tasteless; that it incites religious mockery; that it's not very good. And I'd bet that future critics will wonder what happened to wunderkind Martin Amis between, say, Money and this.

'The Last Days of Muhammad Atta', by Martin Amis.

Could only Martin Amis describe a shit, shave and a shower as "the chore of ablution, the ordeal of excretion, the torment of depilation"?

I'd like to hope so -- but regrettably I fear there are a host of imitations.
