'Faith and Hope Go Shopping', by Joanne Harris

I find much of Harris's short fiction rather disappointing, compared to her novels. Many of them seem to rely too heavily on a one-line twist at the end. (This may be an artefact of the audience she's aiming for, which seems to be the 'women's magazine' market.) But this story does rather more, and does it quietly and unflashily and honestly.

lovely - left me with a tear in my eye. Now I have to dig out all my Joanne Harris books and read them again.

I liked this one too. The odd thing with harris is she clearly likes and knows about some SF/F but seems hesitant to dip her toe too far when writing. Chocolat is a Fantasy novel.
