Something light for Friday morning!

'How the First Letter Was Written', by Rudyard Kipling

I remember my father giving me a copy of Just So Stories. I was probably too young to appreciate that he'd read them, too, when he was a little boy -- back in prehistoric times, as far as I was concerned.

I do love Kipling's illustrations. And I hadn't realised, 'til rereading this morning, that the story was explicitly set in Britain ...

Not only is it set in Britain, the poem at the end makes it clear that it's set in one of my favourite bits of country, the Tillingbourne valley (http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/LookupWebPagesByTITLE_RTF/Tillingbourne+at+work?opendocument) just south-east of Guildford. When I was at school in Guildford, we used to be sent on cross-country runs all through and around there, and the prettiness of the scenery did a lot to distract me from how up-and-down (especially Up) it was :-)
