One of the Reasons I Don't want an iPhone
Monday, January 15th, 2007 12:33 pmApple boss Steve Jobs proudly unveiled the new iPhone this week promising that the latest must-have gadget would see the beginning of a new era in robbery-with-violence. ... Possession of the much-hyped device means that there is almost nothing that a busy iPhone owner cannot do while on the move, apart from going outside.
Obviously, I've reduced my muggability by about 80% just by moving out of Lewisham. And probably another 10% by learning to drive, thus ensuring that I'll be moving too fast for all but the most determined (and athletic) mugger*. But having lost a mobile phone, an iPod, a minidisk player, a PDA and a radio to muggers, the idea of 'losing' them all in one package really doesn't appeal.
*Red lights still an Opportunity, of course: but I lock the doors when I'm driving.

Date: Monday, January 15th, 2007 07:18 pm (UTC)Gracious... I have a whole new respect (fear?) for living in England now... I've never given more than half a thought to the concern of mugging, even when living in downtown Los Angeles. Did you lose all those devices in *separate* muggings?
*proposes you move to America... quite nice here ;-)*

Date: Tuesday, January 16th, 2007 09:07 am (UTC)Three muggings. One on New Year's Eve 1990 (radio): the other two within a space of 14 months around 2002-3. In the first of these they got my minidisk player and my phone. In the second, they got the iPod that replaced my minidisk player and my new PDA (and probably another phone as well, I really don't recall ...)
Quite nice in most of England too, but not Lewisham!
