Further to my earlier post about eldritch date conversion in Google Docs'n'Spreadsheets, I am creating some test spreadsheets with various apps. (See under cut.)

So, where is the setting in Microsoft Excel 2003 which says "Yes, I do believe that a date before 1st Jan 1900 can be formatted as a date?"

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks! But grrrrr, because I can't install it here at werk. And grrrrr again, because Why Doesn't It Just Work?

am compiling laugh-a-minute list of conversion issues. Following this, I shall be using pen and paper, scanning the result and emailing it to New Zealand.

Ah, thank you! That's useful for me too at work. We don't often have data sets going back prior to 1900 but we do sometimes.

How to give Excel indigestion:
enter the date 2/1/1900 in a cell (for the purpose of the exercise, A1).
then enter a formula in the next cell: A1-1.
Repeat the formula across succeeding cells.
Marvel at the date 0/1/1900 and the row of ############s as Excel doesn't know what to do.
