you are a gentleman, sir. Thank you. Pirata it is (should've guessed, from Bellini's not-very-good Il Pirata)

Actually, I suspect a genuine Roman's first choice might be neither of those, but latro, a generic term for a bandit or freebooter, either land or sea-based.

I remember doing "Caesar and the Pirates" at school, but can't remember the source.

Or there's a latin translation of the Asterix books....

Pirate? Totally bullshitting, but hey, it could be.

What approximate year do you think the Pirates movies are set? Late 1700s?

Hello!

Early 1700s, if that late, I'd say. Though 'The Past' is more accurate, what with the costumes and all. In terms of the prevalence of pirates and the Pearl being 'the last great pirate threat', probably around 1720-1740. In terms of the map on the wall in POTC2, some time after 1780. In terms of the dialogue, some time after 1980 <g>

The Latin for 'diver' is 'urinator', according to Tim Ecott in 'Neutral Buoyancy'. Unless he's taking the piss.

Not certain, but I'm pretty sure it starts with an "arrrrrrh"...
