... it has just been pointed out to me that it is a Christmas laptop.

Can you guess which key is missing?

I believe the Heavy Artillery is being brought into play tomorrow.

In a worst-case scenario, would you be in a position to supply me with another of the same? (Can probably send keyboard back if no joy ...)

Oh yes, I have another one here! It might work, too ...

We can do a laptop swap even, and I can see if I can get the buggre to behave.

have no objection to paying for a replacement ... am quite devoted to Thinkpad tho!
what do you think I should do with this keyboard? Could probably send it back.

I might be interested in it - I have enough dead 560Xes to probably build a working one. I'll have a good look over the weekend and let you know. The 560X is horribly underpowered by modern standards, but, as you've found, its form factor and weight is lovely and its keyboard is really usable for a laptop — so if you're doing early '90s sort of things (e.g. writing or simple graphics, rather than using it as a television substitute on teh intarweb) it's lovely.

well, this keyboard is fab, and unsullied by human touch as far as I can tell. And it only cost me £10 or £12, so it may well be worth the risk of it not working.

And if you need any Testimonials re the 560, you know where to come: mine is utterly fab for what I want it for, which is word-processing and a bit of messing around with graphics. Lack of webby stuff a definite bonus.

Would be seriously interested in swapping this one + working keyboard + (£TBC) for one with a newer keyboard and Ubuntu instead of Windows ...

hee! I can whack on Ubuntu easily enough :-) Though Ubuntu tends to assume you're on a broadband connection for ease of updating. And the PC card in the 560X is dodgy under some recent Linux versions (Linux no longer making allowances for crappy hardware) and didn't work properly under Ubuntu 5.04. I should see if it behaves under Ubuntu 5.10.
