I've been trying to register with a local GP since August. The nearest one is about 5 mins' walk, but has been at capacity. Today, on a whim, I popped in: yes, no problem.
Thinking of learning to drive, I realise I will need to see where I'm going. Pop into Specsavers to book an eye test. "Oh, lucky you! Our sale starts Monday, 25% off!" says the girl, booking me in for Monday morning.
Helpful shop assistants everywhere today (and my Christmas shopping suddenly almost done): the sort of people who ring other branches for that particular pair of boots; or fetch you a second pack of gift-labels because they're on 2-for-1; or disentangle you (with hilarious consequences) from an especially spiky festive wreath, somewhat wrecked by encounter with fringed scarf, and find it funny.
I really should've made it down to Brighton beach, though, to test out my wi-fi. (Would be complaining at lack of any answers to any of my emails, but even brief reflection tells me it is better this way. Better and quieter.)
And am ever so pleased I've already sorted my late-December travel to Plymouth: another reason not to take the train.
