1. I don't think I've ever been living in an urban area, with cats, on November 5th before. Poor darlings! They've spent the evening huddled together behind the kitchen door, trembling at the noise. These two can't usually bear to be in the same room as one another.

2. Fireworks Night makes me think of my father, who was the one who used to share my glee in them when I was a child. I remember the year when, having fired off all the rockets etc, he set off an out-of-date yachting flare in the middle of the strawberry bed. It lit up the entire garden.
We lived a long way away from our nearest neighbours.

3. Hit 20K on NaNoWriMo thing today. Last year the main problem was Real Life. This year it's Distraction. Hakluyt's Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation (1598) is over a million words long, and the spelling is idiosyncratic. I open it up -- thank heavens for e-text -- to find a relevant factoid, and spend hours reading.

4. It was oddly comforting to sit here listening to [livejournal.com profile] rozk on the radio just now, talking about fan fiction and Buffy.

5. I seem to've gone middle-aged overnight, in behaviour and outlook. (Partly why I'm not out partying, or even at a public firework display.) Am hoping this is a temporary, or at least reversible, state.

Jo and I were feeling distinctly grumpy and anti-social tonight and hence missed a firework party - we spent a fruitful evening shampooing carpets and building flat-pack wardrobes. So not only middle aged, but SUBURBAN. I am about to crack open a bottle of laphroaig - so no longer middle aged but retired....

My two puds have barely woken from their slumbers long enough to twitch a whisker about the crashes, flashes and bangs all around us tonight. They've been remarkably chilled about the whole thing. This could be because they were "trained" at the old house, where we didn't have good double glazing but did have a variety of extremely noisy (student) neighbours. Teasle (EL Gordo) seems to be more afraid of the window cleaners...and the vac!

If that is middle-aged it's the kind of middle-aged I'd aspire to (not that I think you have)

A month of fireworks with another month to go is enough reason to go middle-aged. I believe there are "pubs" one can go to where there are not fireworks.

5. I think I have too. I am mildly worried, which is why I have just decided to go to Novacon after all.

1. My cats are scared too. I find as a result that I who used to like fireworks am now actively hostile to them..

The official display here was on the 4th for some reason. Not much banging around on the 5th - I went to a pub and that led to a karaoke session then to a club until 2 am .....

I have commented on my journal about cats & fireworks: suffice to say we have one cat who occasionally hides behind the sofa, depending on the volume of the explosions, and one who is now (semi-)officially nicknamed 'Daredevil: The Cat Who Knows No Fear' who couldn't give a hoot if a rocket chooses to explode in our back garden! And she used to be so nervous...
(she is currently sitting in the armchair across the room not-looking at me. It looks like she's looking at me, but she can't be. She is aiming her head in my general direction in any case...)
