1. I am not a Gilbert and Sullivan fan.
2. But I have a friend (a foreign friend) who is, and who wanted to see this while she was in the UK.
3. Karl Daymond as the Pirate King made Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow look straight, repressed and self-effacing. Swishiest pirate ever.
4. However, am still not a G&S fan.

Other highlights: the costumes (pirates all in Viv Westwood-style punk, complete with mohawks, top-knots and bike boots, and Frederic in delicious lime-green tiger-print coat, and ("Nice hat!") hot pink tricornesque thing); Mabel (Jeni Bern, who has a splendid voice); Jean Rigby as Ruth.

But mainly, pirates. Arrrrr!

I'm glad to know there's at least one other person in my vicinity who doesn't like G&S.

Well, yes, and hurrah for and end to prescribing what we should like and shouldn't. Yes, I can be English and not like Gilbert and Sullivan.
Mind you, that doesn't excuse Tony Parsons referring as he has done to 'Gilbert and Sullivan racism'. Anyone who thinks - as he seems to - "The Mikado" is set in Japan probably thinks "Xena: Warrior Princess" is set in Greece.

I would just like you to know that I have ten (and counting) fucking pages of notes, Jacks 1 & 2 quipping at each other in a dingy diner in my head (Sparrow having picked up Shaftoe as a hitchhiker) and the sort of Sparrington story arc planned that makes me go cross-eyed with guh. What I don't have is a solid conception of the story line, ANY idea how the sodding timeline is going to work, or any idea how I'm supposed to get out of this with my sanity intact, nor any idea when I'm going to write this monster, considering I'm supposed to be writing my novel!

Harlot.

Soggy, cold love from Normandy. Promise proper bitch love upon return to sunnier climes. Mwah.

Sanity is overrated! When are you going to type it all up, eh? eh?

Hope Normandy slightly warmer than UK: though doubt it. Have fun!
