'Opera' (ish): Pirates of Penzance, ENO, 22.01.05
Monday, January 24th, 2005 02:23 pm1. I am not a Gilbert and Sullivan fan.
2. But I have a friend (a foreign friend) who is, and who wanted to see this while she was in the UK.
3. Karl Daymond as the Pirate King made Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow look straight, repressed and self-effacing. Swishiest pirate ever.
4. However, am still not a G&S fan.
Other highlights: the costumes (pirates all in Viv Westwood-style punk, complete with mohawks, top-knots and bike boots, and Frederic in delicious lime-green tiger-print coat, and ("Nice hat!") hot pink tricornesque thing); Mabel (Jeni Bern, who has a splendid voice); Jean Rigby as Ruth.
But mainly, pirates. Arrrrr!
