Today, something happened that hasn't happened for years -- possibly for a decade.

I received a letter (and a very late Christmas card) from my cousin Madeleine in France.

I've sent them various cards, letters, photos and updates over the years since my father first went into the nursing home, but have never had a reply until now. I'm amazed (and happy) to hear that my final aunt is still alive ("no pain but age"), and that my cousins' children are all finishing their various degrees ...

(Madeleine turns out to be working for the Bibliotheque Nationale, conserving the documents of the Societe de Geographie, including the accounts of various 17th-century explorers. I wonder if it was the mention of Dampier that inspired her to write?!)

And it's a lovely day: so warm and sunny that I sat on a bench at the top of Lewisham Hill and soaked up sun on my bare arms.

And I'm about to head off and have a swim and then pay a fleeting (or not) visit to the Tun.

Something good, something good! Hurrah! (And maybe even some relevant info on Dampier in the offing?!)

oh, there's nothing like coming home to lots of comments, only to find that it's people you never see making arrangements to have fun ... :)
Glad you're feeling brighter, anyway!
