[film] RED

As soon as I saw the trailer (which features Helen Mirren with a machine gun) I was hooked. Sadly, there is not as much Helen Mirren with a machine gun as I had hoped. But Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman do excellent work; Karl Urban is a good foil; the film scrapes through the Bechdel test, just about; it's funny, though somewhat creepy if one identifies with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker, also pretty good); and there are several exciting and inspirational scenes featuring Helen Mirren with a machine gun. Fun!

I'm not familiar with Warren Ellis's original graphic novel, though, so I can't say how close the adaptation is.

RED on IMDB
Room -- Emma Donoghue
"He's a very special boy."
Ma shrugs. "He's just spent his first five years in a strange place, that's all."
"You don't think he's been shaped -- damaged -- by his ordeal?"
"It wasn't an ordeal to Jack, it was just how things were." (p. 236)
