Cloud Atlas

I am pleased* to announce that Tesco's are selling Cloud Atlas for £3.73. (Their bestseller chart, most of which is priced at this utterly random-looking figure, includes some other good stuff, such as The Jane Austen Book Club and the new Joanne Harris anthology.)

*though not as pleased as if I hadn't bought it from Amazon last week

Asda often has a good selection of recently published books for ridiculously low prices too.

I'm not sure if it's just our local Tesco being strange but I can never figure out how much their books are. They have something up saying "from £3.73" but don't point out which ones might be that price or have any price stickers on the books or anything useful so I can only assume they're full price.

Except I don't shop at Tesco on principle.

I don't want to give money to Shirley Porter.

Based on the principle that if Tesco does it it must be bad, I would imagine someone, quite likely someone worthy and largely blameless, is getting screwed by this. Supermarkets? Just say no.

The people getting screwed are small booksellers, who can't afford to sell at a very low (possibly even negative) profit margin. When I have money, I have principles. Right now, however, I will abet market abuses of this kind ...

If you have a newsfeed, alt.binaries.ebooks (news:alt.binaries.ebooks) is a good source of reading matter at zero cost to the receiver. You have to be comfortable with copyright theft though. IME the difference made to the market by eBook sharing is minute compared to what the WalMarts and Tescos do to the book distributors and small bookshops, so it's a lesser evil.
