Every time I've visited over the last few years (I have ex-pat friends all over the States) I have been perturbed by the little changes (attitudes, advertising, beliigerent patriotism etc). I do think they're magnified by the company I've kept, though: a native American might not find them noteworthy.
Georgia is lovely, and they're not all Bush fans (you can stop for peach ice cream with my parents if you don't believe me). Savannah, St. Simon's Island, and the whole Georgia Gold Coast of Atlantic beachside towns is gorgeous. Cumberland Island is worth a visit if you like nature, barrier islands, and wild horses. And might I add that Jimmy Carter, my favourite ex-President, is still quite active in local / national charities from his foundation in Atlanta. (He's not a Bush fan, either.)
As often as I've begged you to come and visit, I now retract that offer. Don't do it. Do not spend one pence in America, or on American goods, or in support of Amercian activities. Go to Spain, go to Morrocco -- go somewhere with people who do not support invading and killing others for the sake of oil and money. I'll join you wherever you decide, and we'll have a nice time.
Come and see me in 2008. I still love you, but I am ashamed of my country
