Handel! Mithraism! Southend-on-sea!
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004 02:24 pm"A certain kind of debt, which might make sense only to novelists, ought to be acknowledged to the late Dorothy Dunnett and to Alexandre Dumas."
- Neal Stephenson, Acknowledgements, The System of the World.
Does Mr Stephenson know something about Dumas that we do not? Is not he, also, Late?
Luckily -- due to a flaw in the otherwise-excellent Transport for London Journey Planner -- I was on the slow London Bridge-Victoria train today, which was extra slow because of passenger (not me) taken ill at Balham. Luckily, I say, because it meant I could finish the book. (slightly catty, slightly spoilery comment removed here as could not easily hide it.)
I had not expected to finish it quite so soon, but MobiPocket's page counter was not equal to a novel that is 16,000 PDA pages in length. (And, as already discussed, the T3's batteries were only capable of 3-hour stints: suspect Mobipocket eats more juice than PalmReader).
For what it's worth, I enjoyed it very much indeed. And intend to reread it, paying especial attention to diverse Bits, just as soon as my Brain has digest'd it.
Please will someone else finish reading it, too, so that I can talk about it?
