Disappearing drives

Something weird is going on.

I physically removed the external drive that wasn't working (see here for details.

Now my other external drive has disappeared in exactly the same way.

Could this be some sort of weird virus? (I run AVG daily and it hasn't spotted anything; but ...)

All speculation gratefully received.

presuming you have tried them in a different usb socket. try disconnecting the usb hub as well, may be doing strange things wit the power. Do your other usb devices work?

can you test the drive on another machine?

Points at the cables or the port. Try changing both. Also try onboard slow ports, just to see.
