I'm having trouble with words today. I do not like this.

What is the word for when one part of a company splits off and becomes an independent company?

(Also, just for my peace of mind, 'parking ticket' = the thing you get from a traffic warden when you park illegally, yes? So what is the thing you get out of a machine to ward off wardens?)

Depends.

If it's a new company set up from sratch to do something new, then it's a spin-out (like the various technology companies set up by Universities to exp[lot an innvoation).

A demerger is where a discrete part of a larger company - like a wholly owned subsidiary or operating company - splits off. Argos Stores Group used to be part of GUS but demerged to become Home Retail Group, for example.

2 is also a parking ticket. Or, longwindedly, a ticket for the car park.
