Scarborough: a state of mind.

Dave Langford's begun to compile a memorial site for Abi Frost, who died suddenly last week. It includes the newsletters from Mexicon 5, which took place in Scarborough in 1993.

I couldn't remember if I'd been there or simply imagined it. (That is, I have memories of being on the beach at Scarborough, and cannot think why else this would have been.) But evidence suggests that I was present.

All of a sudden I feel terribly, terribly old.

That was my very first convention. Edward brought me along because he said I couldn't write a PhD on sf without attending conventions. I was terrified.

I hadn't seen Abi for years but I have good memories of sitting in the Brittania Hotel in Docklands, drinking and smoking and setting the world to rights. (And being wittily mean to random fans. Just 'cause.)

I likewise hadn't seen Abi in many years -- I think she dropped out of sight for a lot of us after that TAFF (was it TAFF?) brouhaha, but I'd always kind of assumed she was there, as it were, and that I'd bump into her again at some point. I'm feeling quite thrawn about the whole thing.

I was not only there, I found my handwritten write up of it just the other day. And I may have been on the committee (not sure and no way to find out now..) I remember loving Scarboro. Why do we never go back there for cons these days?? the hotel hasn't fallen into the sea as far as i know..

I was about to assert that you were there and that I have a photo to prove it -- but I thought I'd better check and it turns out that you aren't in it after all, although I suspect you are nevertheless present in spirit. Catie ran a photopage -- full cover even! -- in the June mailing of Acnestis, which I think may have been just before you joined, a collage of Mexicon shots featuring Steve J with long hair, Andy B ditto, Maureen 'Velcro Knees'...
