The Old Municipal Market, Brighton -- with Anish Kapoor's The Dismemberment of Joan of Arc as stage. Chamber Domaine cond. Thomas Kemp: mezzo-soprano Anna Grevelius.

The marvellous thing was feeling that audience, orchestra and artwork were sharing a space: a very Brighton space with seagulls screeching overhead, their shadows passing across the filthy glass roof, and sirens from the streets outside.

Rossini's Giovanna d'Arco was originally written as a cantata for piano and mezzo: Teresa Berganza persuaded Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino to orchestrate it. Sciarrino produced an authentic Rossini sound, full of woodwind and sonority. The music is lovely and Grevelius, in a simple white shift atop the white wooden steps, is a passionate singer.

I'm really glad to have been there.
