Does anyone have an opinion on EI Systems cheap laptops?

Currently on 6th reboot of writing-laptop in the hope it'll let me far enough in that I can copy a new ntoskrnl.exe across -- though frankly I am not confident.

Keep worrying that werk will notice my werk laptop in action and be Suspicious ...

Don't know these people but there is a great second hand computer shop in Cambridge -have just bought lovely fully loaded reconditioned X40 thinkpad with new battery for £195 (I have a heavy duty Dell laptop but wanted something lighter for when I'm not going to meetings in my car or for browsing Sunday papers in bed). Happy to get one of my techy friends to go down with you if you're in the area.

My other tip is to ring Dell direct at the end of the quarter -it's well known that they have huge pressure to meet quarterly sales targets and you can usually negotiate some savings or upgrades .

Hope this helps -I'm a PC user rather than a geek so this is limit of my Pc knowledge.

I really don't want another second-hand one (and with any luck by the time the credit card bill arrives my flat will be sold and I'll have the money to justify a new one!) And it's fairly urgent since I now have no legitimate computing power (though this illegitimate werk laptop, which I am supposed to leave in the office naughty me, does fine for email). I may give Dell a call though if I can keep my hands off Amazon One-Click ...!

Dell keep sending me leaflets in the post with pretty attractive offers even without negotiating. Bought our first Dell a couple of weeks ago because it's what our computer support chap deals in and abrinsky's laptop was Dead, Dead, Dead. So far, so happy.

I'm writing on an EiSystem laptop right now. Other than the death of the battery (which eventually happens with all laptops), it's been very reliable. Ann has a Gericom with a slightly higher spec, but it's obvious from the design (especially the colour of the sockets at the back) that they were constructed by the same factory.

The Cambridge shop is the one near Bacchanalia in Mill Road. They also do repairs and parts. The chap who runs it is a miserable so and so but knows his stuff . You'll get most out of him if you bring a techy to chat to him. This cheers him up and he may even let you see the new stock in the back room.

a very basic spec from a no-name system builder - I couldn't even see the price but the cpu is naff and the battery life is abysmal. HP, Packard Bell and Dell would be better choices and you should find one at a similar price and better spec.
