Dear Lazyweb

Is there a proper name for the area between the eyelid and the eyebrow?

Love, Tamaranth

I deem it "the eyeshadow".

Make-up poeple tend to refer to it as the browbone.

I thought it might be epicanthus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthus), but that appears to be something slightly different, but I thought I should mention it in case it's what you meant.

hmm, confusing, 'cause I'd've said browbone (from a more pragmatic point of view) was the bony bit under the eyebrow (or where the eyebrow originally was, in some cases!)

Ah, well, the makeup people generally use "the crease" the refer to the bit below that. I guess it depends a bit on the shape of one's eyes!

only after dark! (mine usually starts off on my actual eyelid, anyway: it's the highlighter, and I don't mean a day-glo felt pen, that I apply to the whatever-it-is).

c'mon, I want a Word so I can Google for why it gets swollen ...

I'd call it the upper orbit, though there are some latin names. As far as swelling round the eye goes, it might be a hayfever symptom, or a reaction to a small insect bite, or a random swelling. Either way, the treatment is the same -- anti-histamines.

If that's your question, the answer is probably "eyelid."

but it's not my eyelids that are swollen. My eyelids are fine. It's the recurrent problem of fluid retention (or something) in the area between eyebrow and eyelid ....

I don't think it's an allergic reaction, though obviously it could be. It tends to happen when I'm tired, or on the downslide of an emotional state. One person suggested it was thyroid-related, but I haven't been able to find anything about that.

That skin around the eye - I've seen it all called "eyelid".

Treatment for your condition: antihistamines and/or haemorrhoid ointment. Yes, Preparation H the night before is a cure for swollen eyes well-known to young models and aging queens.

Vaguely on topic: I was complaining about how the human body has so many parts which all have funny names, and a helpful person said "especially the humerous".

Sounds like it might be stress-related swelling to me (I get it in my fingers from time to time) -- especially if it tends to go away after you've rested and relaxed.

That said, I'd be inclined to take it to the doctor anyway -- look after the face, it's too close to the brain to take chances with.

Here's a couple of links which might help you out as far as causes go. Search tems: facial swelling, edema.
