On 29th October I embark on a trip that includes four long-haul flights. (UK-US, US-NZ, NZ-HK, HK-UK). I can just about manage without music, though obviously I would much rather not have to. But the thought of those flights without a book to read -- without a bloody (note)book to write! -- is horrific.

On the other hand, I don't think they can (or will need to) keep up the current level of alert for two months.

And yes, I'm perfectly happy to take a single, clear, carrier bag on those flights. I'll just make sure I'm reading something really embarrassing.

I can lend you some copies of Be-Boy, but that's only really embarrassing if there are people on the flight who read Japanese, or know what it contains. There are hints in Engrish on the cover of the latest, though...

You can't leave it like that. We have to *know* what you plan to take.

I'm not sure this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1931686408) would last me until take-off, let alone landing. But the illustrations are fab!

(Apparently people have been allowed to take on books that they've bought once past security. So I shall make sure not to read any current novels for the next two months -- in case I end up desperately seeking stimulation, as it were, in W H Smith.)

going to visit co-author in Middle-Earth. Was really looking forward to the actual travelling, as writing- and reading-time!

OMG! How exciting! Are you stopping for any time in the USA? I could come out to CA to see you! Where in NZ is your co-author?

bought in the airport is treated as sterile and you can have a small laptop bag's worth now, so travelling should be more bearable. the airport economics depend not on flying but on shopping.
